An accidental landlord journey
Our accidental landlord journey

Our journey into property didn’t begin as a strategy, it began with loss.

Becoming accidental landlords in the UK

The house that made us accidental landlords was originally our first home together. But when Dan’s mum became ill, we made the decision to move so she could live closer to us and our wider family. After she passed away, the property became part of Dan’s inheritance; something deeply emotional and never part of a plan to turn into income.

At the time, we were both still working full-time, so we kept the house and rented it out through a managing agent. It was the easiest and most practical option that allowed us to take our time while we figured out what the future might look like.

Getting more involved in property rental the process

When the long-standing tenants eventually moved on to buy their own home, we took the opportunity to improve it. Rather than simply re-letting the property as it was, we chose to refurbish it properly and bring it up to a much higher standard, and to manage the tenancy ourselves.

The renovation was comprehensive, involving various contractors and not a small amount of personal time and effort. We installed a new boiler and radiators throughout, fitted a new kitchen with new appliances, replastered and redecorated the property, laid new flooring, and carried out significant garden works. Our aim wasn’t to cut corners or maximise short-term returns, it was to create a home we’d be proud to live in ourselves, let alone offer to another family.

Turning a house into a home

The property is a fantastic family home, backing onto local green space and within easy reach of amenities and public transport. When it was advertised, the level of interest confirmed what we believed all along: well-maintained homes, finished to a high standard and offered at a fair rental value, attract the right tenants.

Over time, as the property was well maintained and improved, its value increased. This gave us the opportunity to refinance and reinvest, turning what began as an accidental situation into a foundation we could thoughtfully build from.

What started from something very personal and sad became a meaningful step in building a future for our own family. It reinforced our belief that being a landlord carries responsibility, and that doing things properly benefits everyone involved.
